Stem Cells: The Building Blocks of Life
Holoclar
Recently, a stem-cell treatment known as the Holoclar was approved in Europe on December 18, 2014. The treatment is used to treat patients with limbal stem cell deficiencies. Limbal stem cells, found in the eye between the cornea and schlera, are essential in repairing any damage to outer layer of the cornea. However, damaged limbal cells can cause the cornea to deteriorate. To reverse the deterioration, a sample of the patient’s own undamaged limbal stem cells are grown in vitro to produce corneal cells. The new corneal cells are then infused into the patient's eye. Holoclar has so far proven successful in twenty patients at the Moorsfield Eye Hospital in London. This new advancement is based on twenty years of clinical research and will continue to relieve patients' sufferings!
